Track Selection

As I have posted on the post before, I have chosen the song "Starving" by Hailee Steinfeld.

I have felt that even though the song is in between EDM and Pop, I still believe that this track is good enough and easy enough to adapt to our own style that would make audiences interested as well.

The song starts off with a slow and soft start then the rhythm increases and then the song becomes more like EDM and by the end of the song it goes back to soft and ends.
I strongly believe that with this song it would not be dull as it has a climax to it but it is also up to the music video as well.

The track selection was not as hard as we thought because we have similar tastes and therefore we found tracks and music videos that we knew was suited to the majority of us.

Starving was also a new release so therefore I feel that the style of music and the music video should be interesting to modern adult audiences as well as teenagers.

For this term, the main things that we need to do is the following:
--> Digipaks

How we found our song - Music video

Hi BLOG,

In today's lesson we were first introduced to our main coursework which was making our own music videos.

Once again, I have teamed up with Abby and Moji.
This time we wanted to help each other and we decided not to assign roles but just try to experiment every role so we have more in sight of each role as well as to know more than just one skill.

"2015-2016"

                                                "2016-2017"

Our genre that we have decided was based mainly on EDM, Pop. At first, we decided on songs that were mainly "male" vocal based because the songs were pretty good and was what we've been looking for. However, we only have girls in our group therefore we decided to be more loose with our genre and just find songs that we think were pretty good for our group.

Abby and I we suggested a music video that is slow motion-ish and focuses on close up shots, while Moji suggested that if it is slow motion and close ups there should be some shots of touch or feel to give more emotions to the music video.

Just before the end of the lesson, I have found a very interesting music video and song that was kind of what we were all looking for...
- a song that has a slow start or soft start
- has a high point/ climax that makes the music more exciting
- EDM somewhere throughout the song
The song was called "Starving" by Hailee Steinfeld

Planning for music video

Hi Blog,

Last week lesson Abby, Moji and I, we went just outside of the lesson to have some quiet time together to think of the things we would like for our music video.

Like I have mentioned, We have decided to choose the song called "Starving" by Hailee Steinfeld

After deciding on the song that we were going to do, we have decided to do extra research on our own and go on different music videos to watch and get ideas of what we can use and adapt in our music video.

I have had some ideas that I have nip from other music videos.
For examples the slow motion movements of the characters, the close ups of the character's body parts e.g. arm, leg, face
The music video that I really liked was Selena Gomez's song - Kill them with kindness because of the black and white shots and the close ups of her which was very eye catching and the slow movements were very rhythmic with the song.

Even these scenes are shot in a depressing emotion but I feel that it is very powerful and gives a perfect signal to audiences and therefore I want to make a similar shot that is as powerful as these shots.

Moreover, I also like the music video of Miley Cyrus - "Adore You" due to the white sheets and calm environment which I can used or adapt to my music video. Also, the close ups here are significant as it shows her feelings a lot and emphasizes her situation linked to the music.

The lights or effects here are what I feel can also be put onto my music video and the what sheets can also be my intertextuality as well.
The song here however contrasts because the genre in Miley's song is pop and slow while Hailee "Starving" song is more upbeat and has a sub genre of EDM as well.

In addition, Justin Bieber - "Company" track is another favorite of mine. Even though Justin Bieber scenes were in different places but I feel that every shot is meaningful to him and therefore portrayed in this music video.

This shot of Justin and his reflection is another shot that I feel is very different and unique because if this shot was taken not as well, it changes the mood or audiences view point.

I really love this shot because the sunset behind Justin Bieber really makes this scene very relaxed and makes it different from the other shots with other effects.

performer's clothing (treatment feedback)

Clothing Ideas

Hi, Yesterday we had our feedback on our treatment back and the most significant point for us was on clothing. Because of our straightforward storyline, we need something for our performer to stand out from the background.
An intern that came to watch our treatment  suggested that we should have a unique style for our performer and because our storyline is based on the performer, therefore we have to make the performer as attractive as much as possible.

Actress -->
Our actress style that we have pictures was very different between the three of us...
However, we have this theme of "HIPPY, INDY-ish". Because the performer has to travel to many places that are mostly markets or colorful and vibrant location. Therefore I believe that the style shouldn't be too classy nor too bland and dull.

In my opinion, I want the performer to wear a over size shirt that is either pastel colors or any colors that are not black or white so the performer stands out from the crowd.

For the pants, I want it to be short jeans as I feel that it will fit with the shirt more and it looks more active in my idea.

For the shoes, I prefer trainers as the performer portrays as an active and fresh person who loves to go out and explore the world. She is mostly seen as a positive person person as well. I would go with the color black or white for the trainers, as his may make her clothing stand out more and focuses more on her than her feet.

In the lyrics there is this sentence where it says "I was so much younger yesterday", I believe that it should show that she is a more mature person. However, this may symbolize as mentally and/or physically, so I suggests that the clothing shouldn't be too old or young. Therefore, I chose the baggy shirt to show more matureness as the shirt is too big for her and so it suggests that she is still too small.

Choosing the "finalized" idea...
Because we all have different ideas, we therefore, decided to bring up an idea of clothing for each person and compare our clothing before we decide on the finalize idea.
I feel that this was very fair as this does not exclude anyone from giving ideas and also this may help us have a bigger picture for our music video not just our own.

Moji style
Moji style is based on Kendall Jenner style.
I would say her preference is long tight jeans with crop top shirt or tank top to show more of the shape of the performer.

Abby style
Abby style here is based on relaxed and comfortable clothing that can be worn regularly. She also wants the style to be more manly as it shows that she is not a soft kind of girl.

In conclusion, the majority of us chose to use Abby's converse idea, and Moji's jeans idea and my baggy sweater idea.

We really like everyone's idea so therefore we chose one idea of each person and combine it together to form our original one.

treament feedback

For our treatment, we had a few interesting feedbacks.

Firstly,
My friends were worried about how the music video are going to appeal because the song is mainly about a girl who has grown and is thriving for "sexual" things. However, we thought differently and explained that we already know that this is kind of a sexual song but we have decided to make it a cute and not over-rated version for younger audiences as well.

Secondly,
Michael (an intern) was giving an opinion about how we are going to dress the actors. Because the actress is the singer as well, therefore we need to make sure that her clothing is outstanding and audiences should be able to know who is the performer or the main character.
We felt that this was a big problem for us since we need to think of a style that is connected to the track and make the performer stand out in the music video as well.

Thirdly.
Ten (classmate) was worried if there won't be enough shots, but we suggested that the girl and the guy in the music video is split so therefore there should be enough shots as there will be shots of only the girl and the girl, guy together in the apartment and outside. We also wanted to look similar to the music video "We don't talk anymore" - Selena Gomez therefore it should be alright.

Treatment - Starving

After seeing and knowing how to write a treatment, Abby, Moji and I we did our own treatment on "Starving". This has a lot of what we are going to do, but some may need to adapt to the environment or atmosphere or the locations that we are going to shoot at

Treatment

In this lesson we learnt about Music Treatment and we had received an example of "Turn Down for What" - D.J Snake

Turn down for what - Music Treatment from Histmedia

It tells some details about the music video and gives audiences more in sight of what the music video is about.
The pictures here are also some intertextuality of this music video which was very much useful when filming music videos.

Digipaks features

Hi,

Just to make sure we covered everything we took some photos of the digipaks that we can use as an idea of what to put in.

The Digipaks were usually simple but can really entice audiences.

I feel that a simple cover has to portray a meaning to the audiences clearly and it is also able to entice audiences to buy the product even though they haven't heard the music or know the artist before.

Also, the cover is the most prominent feature of the digipaks therefore it is ideally to attract audiences'  attention.
The cover should include:
- the Artist's name
- the Album name
- image of artist or image relating to the artist or the name of album

The spine of the digipaks allows the audiences to know the basics of what the digipaks is about.
The features of the spine should have:
- Artist's name
- Album name
- Record Label

The back of the digipaks should have the same color or style as the front cover to keep a common theme.
The main use of the back cover is to inform audiences about:
- Tracklist
- Record Label
- Barcode
- Copyright information
- website or social media links
- Producers or production team

I also feel that the inside of the Digipaks also need to illustrate a significant part of the music as well and the pictures inside should be linked to the music or the cover of the Digipaks.

Uptown Funk Evaluation

Evaluation:)

P.S Most of the work or proofs that we did the shots or planning is all in the other posts.

How is my work similar to the final product?

- I would say that the final product is very similar to the original version.
However, some of the parts were different and I feel that it doesn't make it worse and it gives a feeling of originality and style.
I believe that some parts have shown each person's character or personalities and therefore it has shown a big impact on the music video as well.

What did I find difficult or problematic during the SHOOT and the POST-PRODUCTION process?

- I found that finding actors for the music video was kind of hard.
sometimes the people we want that has the perfect personalities and appearance doesn't want to do it and we can't force them as well. Therefore, finding other people who would suite the music video was harder that I have first thought.
Plus, due to our timetables and the different time schedules, we weren't able to do the shoot right away or together as a big group and that was one of the biggest problems I have faced on this task.

- Moreover, I found out that the different scenes need to take a lot of patience and when taking a scene it takes at least 3 takes to get it right.
To be honest, I really like filming the music video!!!

- For the editing part, I just felt that when I tried to edit the shots, it was not easy when I had to make the video in line with the music and the mouth of the actor have to perfectly match the lyrics.

How did I find it working in a group?

- it was better than I thought it would be. With great teamwork, we were able to shoot and edit in time even though George was sick, he had helped us edit a lot along side Pooh and the final product was pretty awesome.

- Even though we had our differences, we managed to listen to each other's ideas and we were able to finish the project with very little or no conflict at all.

- I felt very comfortable working with Pooh and George, they gave me patience and great listening and caring skills and therefore I felt that even though I never worked with them before, they were great members and I could work with them again

What lessons you can take into the next project?

- try to have a clear plan before doing the shooting
- try to finish shooting in one day or as fast as you can
- be patient with editing

Music Timeline

Music Timeline

Today in class we had to create our own timeline on Music.

We had to find out:
1. what we were or are listening to...
2. where did I find out about the music?
3. how and where I was listening to the music?

I would say music is apart of my life since a very young age. During my younger years, my mum liked to turn on music such as classical or pop music at night and therefore this have made me feel at I am very attached to music and I feel that every genre or artist has their own inspiration or stories. So that is one of the reasons why I really love listening to music.

own website analysis

Today we have done an analysis on an official websites of our favorite or interesting band or artist. I have chosen a Korean band, 2PM because I feel that they are known world wide and their website is similar to one of the top stars. Also they have included many things that I have felt that this website was a very efficient.
